Samsung CEO sentenced to 2.5 years for corruption

A court in South Korea ruled against Lee Jae Young, the vice president of Samsung Electronics. He was found guilty of bribery and embezzlement. Lee has been the de facto president of Samsung Electronics since 2014. This was reported by Reuters on Monday.

The Seoul Supreme Court sentenced Samsung’s main heir to two and a half years in prison for bribing former Republic of Korea president Park Geun-hye to strengthen his power within the holding. Lee Jae Young was detained in the courtroom.

Lee Jae Young has been accused of bribing Park Geun-hye’s partner, Choi Sun Sil, in an attempt to seek government help to gain control of Samsung Group. The prosecution believes the bribe was 29.8 billion won ($ 27.4 million).

Samsung’s president was charged with bribery in a corruption case in early 2017. As a result of the scandal, Pak Geun-hye, the country’s first woman president, was overthrown.

The Samsung chief then served nearly a year in prison. The Supreme Court later returned his case to the Seoul High Court.
